Pill organiser or reminder app? An honest comparison

By PillRem ·

There is no single right answer. A plastic pill box and a reminder app solve different parts of the same problem.

What a pill box does well

  • You see at a glance whether today’s dose is gone.
  • It needs no battery, no phone and no setup.
  • Filling it once a week is a good moment to check the stock.

Where a pill box falls short

  • It does not remind you: if you do not look at it, it does nothing.
  • It only suits tablets and capsules, not liquids, dissolving tablets or patches.
  • Once the tablets are out of the box, the name and the expiry date are no longer next to them.
  • It keeps no history, so it cannot show a doctor how the last month went.

What an app does well

  • It reminds you at the right time, even on silent if you use critical alerts.
  • It records each dose, so you know whether you took it.
  • It counts the stock and warns you before you run out.
  • It can keep a profile for each person you look after.

Where an app falls short

  • It needs a phone, and the person has to notice it.
  • Setting it up takes a few minutes at the start.

Why not both?

Many people fill a weekly pill box and use an app for the reminders and the record. The box shows what to take; the app makes sure it happens on time.

PillRem’s scanner fills in each medicine from its box, which makes the first setup quick.
